Through the lens: Seeing the people behind data

A few days ago I heard the new director of the Confederation of Danish Industry, Lars Sandahl Sørensen, give a speech to the Danish Management Society. A speech which was refreshingly visionary. One of his key messages was that businesses need to resolve the issues of linear and rational thinking in order to be successful in the future. What Lars Sandahl Sørensen did not give a clear-cut answer to however, was what should replace linear thinking. Here is my take on where we should look for the answer. It is not in a new Excel sheet or an MBA from a fancy business school abroad, or within the Danish Management Society for that sake, but rather, within a completely new perspective.

On a recent trip to Germany, I scanned through a catalogue from one of the large DIY retailers. I saw around 10 pages covering smart home devices. Last year it was a mere two pages. The market for smart devices is obviously growing. But it also made me speculate; how many of these first-generation products are actually going to survive in the long run?

We believe it is time to bring the discussion about the future back to where it belongs. It belongs to us - the humans - and not technology. Humans shape technology and technology in turn shapes us, but humans are the starting point.

I have worked with user-centred innovation at IS IT A BIRD for almost half a decade, and have seen three recurring myths about the user centred approach that come up time and again in the organisations I engage with. I would like to debunk these three myths here and now.

With a background in sociology and philosophy I have always been driven by understanding the world and find ways to uncover the complexity out there. Having a background in design, I am used to working with prototypes. I am trained to reduce complexities and deliver concrete answers to complex problems in the shape of products, services, and user stories. But when we zoom out and take a bird’s-eye view of a business, I miss having a tool that is able to convey strategies and business plans in a simple and comprehensible way. "How do you really know if what people tell you is true?" Anthropologists and other researchers are asked this again and again. Either out of curiosity or outright skepticism about the capability of qualitative methods. The answer is that we do not know. In fact, it turns out that people often say things that are not true during an interview.
