We’re back with a fresh round of monthly recommendations - this time, it’s our current favourite songs to inspire your May soundtrack. What track have you been playing on repeat lately?
Don't Fall Asleep - Jacob Alon
Harmen says: “I just found out about Jacob Alon last week - and it fully stopped me in my tracks. It's as if a reincarnated Jeff Buckley listened to Sufjan Stevens and Rufus Wainwright, then decided to sing songs about queerness, self-actualisation, and romantic exploration. Also, the live version of 'Fairy in a Bottle' at Jools Holland... entrancing, hauntingly beautiful. Playing in Ideal Bar (Vega), Tuesday, May 6th.”
Can I Call You Rose? - Thee Sacred Souls
Michael says: “It's almost impossible for me to choose one song, but currently I'm really enjoying 'I Fear Premature Death But You Look Hot Smoking Cigarettes' by up-and-coming Manchester artist DellaXOZ. I think it ties in nicely to all the work on smoking for Sund By Netværket I was part of last year. Otherwise, a springtime favorite: 'Can I Call You Rose?' by Thee Sacred Souls.”
Cool Hand - Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek
Marianne says: “Such a tough pick!! I went to a concert at ALICE CPH in the beginning of the year to experience the Anatolian/German psychedelic folk/soul band Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek. The song 'Cool Hand' is a little sneak peek into the magical and mesmerizing space they created that evening. Just wow!”
Gav Det Et Skud - August Høyen
Pernille says: “My recommendation is my most played song on Spotify from the last month: Gav Det Et Skud by August Høyen, a Danish singer and songwriter.”
Universal Rhythm - Sweet Lemonz
Sarah says: “An atmospheric springy song by my friends! They had a band in 2019, and their whole wee album gives me a nostalgic Danish summer feel when I listen to it. And if I can do one more... 'Mr. Sun' by Greentea Peng has the same atmospheric vibe but about the tease that spring is when one day you have sun and the next is cold and gray.”
Day One - Bon Iver ft. Dijon and Flock of Dimes
Lea says: “Day One is the perfect song to start your day, your week, or your month. Bon Iver just launched a new album, and it’s such a good listen. This song is a great collaboration - it feels like spring, and it puts you in a good mood!”
